A lesson in Wedding Music
What not to do when choosing your Wedding Music
Research has shown that choosing the right live entertainment and wedding music counts for as much as 80% of its success. That’s why your wedding music is oh-so important.
Don’t … confine wedding music to only your musical preferences
Wedding music should be for the masses, featuring wedding songs from every genre and era. Four hours of Country and Western songs is enough to make even the hardiest wedding guest as depressed as the cowboy that’s singing. Make sure your wedding band or DJ will play songs of a wide variety; everything from Classical to Motown, Disco to Pop.
Don’t … leave your wedding music entirely to the band or DJ
Live entertainment should have some leeway as they have the experience to read wedding guests and determine what songs they will respond well to. But don't leave the song decisions entirely up to them. Decide which emotions you would like to evoke at each stage of your wedding and select your music accordingly. From gliding gracefully down the aisle to Gershwin to getting down and boogying to Gorillaz, the wedding music and songs you choose will give your event continuity and flow.
Don’t … make important music decisions without speaking to the bandleader or DJ
Don’t only speak to the wedding band/DJ’s agency or assistant. They might not have the musical expertise to answer your questions regarding acoustics, the amount of equipment needed to service the size of your reception venue or any other wedding music or song issue.
Don’t … waste your time travelling to listen to potential bands
Professional wedding bands will have demo CDs of wedding songs that they will mail out for you to listen to. Some bands such as Sydney group TC Beat also allow you to listen to a sample of their wedding music repertoire over the Internet, as does Melbourne group Hey Sister, who also allow you to download their demo on MP3.
Don’t … over-palpitate Uncle Patrick
The frequency of electrical equipment can sometimes interfere with medical devices such as pacemakers and hearing aids. Seat your guests with these devices at least five metres away from the band or speakers.
