Don't hire this band
It was very upsetting dealing with this band, for four reasons:
(1) The Song List on their website is completely deceptive. We hired them on the basis they could perform those songs. Months before the wedding we sent through a marked up version of the song list with our requests for the songs from their song list to play, which seemed fine at the time. Only a week before the wedding, we were given an entirely new, very substantially truncated version of the song list from the actual performers, that was missing almost all the songs we had requested from their song list. This was followed up by them confirming that 30 of the songs from their song list, they we wanted played, would not and could not be played.
(2) Related to the song list, we felt totally deceived into hiring an additional musician. What happened was that we sent through our requested song list and asked “1) Based on these selections, do you think our current band set up would be able to cover these songs.”
That resulted in the response:
“You have booked the 5 piece band which constains two vocalists and a sax player, this will be sufficient to cover the genres highlighted. The only thing I would say though is it would be great to add a guitarist (for an additonal $595 plus GST), to get the full sound scape for all songs as some feature guitar, but it won’t be the end of the world if you don’t.”
On the basis that an extra guitarist would be better for the songs that we had chosen on the song list, we then hired the extra guitarist. That made it totally crazy that we were told the week before the wedding that most of the songs we had chosen and notified in our email, would not be performed.
(3) One thing we really wanted was to have the band play, live, the song to our first dance. That informed our choice of song. First, we emailed the band to “check with you to see if you would have any issues in performing either of the following songs live for our dance, where we listed our two preferred songs”
We were then told:
“The band will be fine to play either song.”
We responded:
“Just a heads up, we’ve chosen I guess that’s why they call it the blues (Elton John). We would really appreciate it if you guys could perform this song live for us on the day. Please let me know if there are any challenges with this.”
In a subsequent email, we wrote:
“3) Just double checking you’re still ok to sing our first dance song (I guess thats why they call it the blues by elton john) live?”
Again we received the following response:
“Absolutely, we can sing 3 special songs of your choice, these are usually: The Bridal Entry, The First dance, and Father Daughter / Mother Son dance. Let me know if you would like the band to learn songs for the above.”
To which we responded:
“Confirming also that for the time being, we’d like you to just learn our first dance song “I guess thats why they call it the blues” by elton john;.”
Then, ahead of the wedding, we asked if the band could, if possible, provide us in the next few weeks a recording of their version of the song, to practice to.
Then, shockingly, the week before the wedding we were told (via our wedding planner, but given our other communications with the band set out above, I have no reason to think otherwise):
“With respect to the first dance song, the band don’t know how to play that song. They are able to learn it however. I spoke to Paula and we both agreed if you have a choregraphed dance, it would be far better for the band to play this song off a device, rather than played live….They may have to pass on a charge to learn the music and to record any copies for you to rehearse to as well.”
Ultimately, we had to go with a recorded version of the song instead.
(4) We hired them on the express basis, confirmed in an email, that a particular performer (Paula) would be available and would sing. We only found out shortly before the wedding that she would not be available – all we got was a response: “I am so sorry I had to remove myself from your booking, it was a difficult decision but I had no choice.”).
